When comparing the stereotypical state school Instagram posts of drunk undergraduates wearing empty thirty pack “Natty Light” boxes on their heads in the midst of hyping up their Division I football team, to that GW boy who decided the trash can on the street would be an ideal object to dive into, I asked myself this question: Is the GW Barstool account living up to its full potential in comparison to schools twice its size?
Initially, I had no idea that GW even had a Barstool account. This may be because about a year ago, their followers summed up to be a little more than a tenth of the undergraduate student body. Even so, I had the pleasure of being introduced to the account holder. Through an interview conducted at a later date, I formed my own conclusion to the question.
To become familiarized with how the account holder had gotten ahold of this job in the first place, I asked them, “What was your motivation to take on the role of controlling this account?”
The discussion became centered around the concept of how the previous individual who ran GW Barstool was a friend of theirs and frequently came to them for help on deciding what to post or what to caption. Now, remember that as the individual who controls the Instagram account, there are of course going to be risks and conflicts that come with it. People may threaten your life because you know they didn’t really mean to send in that failed attempt to shotgun a beer. They couldn’t have actually wanted everyone to laugh at them about their now assumed incapableness. But, what the account holder disclosed to me was that this concept of consciousness getting in the way was the trigger to giving up their control of the account. They began to see the previous account holder feel bad for keeping posts up even after people were telling them to take it down.
However, how Barstool sees it, which you would think would already be obvious, is that it is your fault if you send in a video, even without the intention of having it posted. Apparently, the current account holder felt that they would be able to take on the responsibility of upholding this policy better and
When the account was passed over, around November 2018, the GW Barstool Instagram only had a following of about 2,000. Since then, their following has increased to almost seven thousand. Some may say this was due to the special feature of Kanye West on GW campus, but in actuality, this only gained the page five hundred followers.
My next question was, “In comparison to other schools and the content they have, what do you feel like GW is missing?”
Their answer: “State schools have a lot of sports content with their rivalries and at GW we don’t really have a whole lot of sports content. So, there
Considering the point of GW being a different school with a “unique campus,” the decision to create more of a “content factory” that differs from the setting or student life which larger state schools attract, was made by the account holder. The posts that generate a lot of positive feedback, in terms of most views, likes, and comments are those that are relatable and specific to the campus life here at GW. The GWU bingo board, stealing the margaritas at Los Cuates, and the hookup bloodbath at Opera posts all depict an accurate representation of the “crazy personalities” described by the account holder.
GW Barstool attempts to appeal to all GW students and it’s student-focused content is recognized in the unique decisions made by the account holder. After putting a face to the account, I feel even more strongly that our university’s Barstool is truly #OnlyAtGW.
