Despite her upbringing as a Brooklyn city girl, Cate Twining-Ward has an undeniable connection to nature. She’s only a sophomore, but she has traveled to more countries than you can imagine.
Last spring, Cate got the opportunity to travel to Sierra Leone, a country in West Africa to be a Photography Intern for a documentary crew who was making a film about sustainable tourism.
While she was traveling, she got the chance to visit the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, a rehabilitation center for chimpanzees who have been rescued from trafficking, poaching, and pet trade.
Not to mention, she also had lunch with Jane Goodall!!
Cate fell in love with their mission and decided to visit again in the summer as a Wildlife Conservation Intern.
Her internship at Tacugama gave her unparalleled, hands-on veterinary experience with the chimps, but she spent most of her time working with the Kids’ Environmental Education Program and other community outreach projects that the sanctuary promotes.
Her primary focus was editing, writing, and designing a conservation curriculum over 100 pages long. The curriculum was divided into three parts: Rainforest Eco-systems, Health and Sanitation, and Wildlife Conservation. As of October, the updated version of this curriculum has been distributed and taught in every primary school in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone.
Cate also helped create a teacher’s manual which explains how to properly communicate this curriculum to students.
If you ever have a conversation with Cate, you will notice the sparkle in her eyes when she speaks about her time in Sierra Leone. She is the perfect example of a young woman who always thinks about the bigger picture and the impact that she can make on others.
Cate continues to pursue her passions here at GW, where she is double majoring in International Affairs and Environmental Studies with a minor in Sustainability.
