I am a socially awkward person. I say most things at the wrong time, I am very shy around new people, and I am not the best at maintaining friendships. So when freshman year sorority recruitment came around, a week full of socializing did not seem like my cup of tea. I didn’t rush, but most of my friends did and that’s how they formed a lot of their social groups. I do think greek life is great for people who will thrive in that kind of environment, however, I knew it was something that wasn’t for me.
As soon as recruitment happened freshman year, I could feel myself getting a little distant from most of my friends. They had 120 new friends to make while I was struggling to make friends in my new classes for that semester. It was hard to watch all of my them have a welcoming, positive community to be a part of while I didn’t have anything similar.
I constantly second guessed my decision not to rush and even considered doing informal recruitment in the fall of my sophomore year. When the time came for informal, I was still on the fence about it. Luckily for me, I didn’t have to make the decision to rush or not because, as some of you may know, it was cancelled the morning it was supposed to start.
Even though I was bummed that I wouldn’t have the opportunity to meet new friends, I forced myself to be social in other ways. That semester I ended up meeting some of my closest friends. I’m happy that I stuck to my gut because it forced me to be social in different ways and make all different kinds of friends. So with that being said, here are some tips to help you create and maintain a satisfying social life without joining greek life.
Get an on-campus job
At the start of my sophomore year, I started working at Southblock. I made new friends with not only my coworkers, but also other students who stopped in to grab a smoothie. Southblock gave me the sense of community and belonging that I hadn’t yet found at GW.
Don’t be afraid to keep your connections with friends in greek life
Having connections with people in different greek organizations allows you to widen your social circle as well. While hanging out with your friends, you can meet the many others within their chapters.
Don’t be scared to reach out to someone else first.
I think one of my biggest problems with being social stems from being nervous to make the first move, even if I did enjoy meeting them and want to be friends. It never hurts to reach out first– most people feel the same way!
These may be easier said than done, but the results will eventually pay off and before you know it socializing won’t even be something you have to think twice about!
