The countless D.C. destinations may be overwhelming to those of us living here for the first time. Here is a guide to help you navigate the coolest places that D.C. has to offer and motivate you to take advantage of living in the nation’s capital.
Let’s start with the free stuff – we are in college, after all. You may have been to some of these places, but if not, they’re good to start with.
The monuments: they’re a 10-minute walk from campus, they’re always open, always free, and they’re beautiful. Don’t just walk around at the Lincoln and Washington. Go inside the Washington Monument, look at the view from the top. Though you might not make it inside any of these, the White House, Capitol Building, and the Supreme Court are always a sight to see. Being in the hub of American politics, you should definitely get around to checking out where everything goes down. If you’re ever bored and not sure what to do, Smithsonian Station is only 5 stops from Foggy Bottom. The Smithsonian museums are open daily and completely free to all visitors. I recommend going to as many as you can. There are 17 museums currently open within the Smithsonian Institution, not including the National Zoo and the Smithsonian Garden. Ford’s Theater, where President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, serves not only as a historical landmark but has performances too. Tickets start as cheap as $3 and you can reserve them online!
During the springtime, you can rent small paddle boats and float in the Tidal Basin while you gawk at the cherry blossoms. Though they’re closed for the current season, put this on your list for spring!
ARETCHOUSE is not your average art museum. Its contemporary exhibits give visitors a taste of technological and innovative art that you don’t see everyday. Their current exhibition Called “Lucid Motion” by Daito Manabe closes on December 1st, but they are constantly coming out with new and exciting exhibits. If you bring your student ID, a ticket costs $13.
The International Spy Museum has exhibits about real spies throughout history, and has tons of cool spy gadgets that were used by them. You can buy tickets in advance online at which cost $22.95 per person.
The Kennedy Center offers tons of performances throughout the year, from Lupe Fiasco to the National Symphony Orchestra. Keep an eye on their events!
