Pinpointing my Passion: Takeaways From a Networking Trip to NYC

I’ve always been jealous of the people who have known exactly what they want to do with their lives since they were little. You know you want to be a doctor, so you go to med school, and then just start working as a pediatrician or a surgeon. They just have it so easy. 

I’m kidding, I know there’s literally nothing easy about the process of becoming a doctor. However, I’ve always struggled with the fact that I don’t know exactly (more like at all) what I want to do for a future career. I know what some of my interests are—fashion and style, content creation, and beauty, but also economics, data and numbers, and finance. How am I supposed to know which of these interests to ultimately pursue, and how do I transform a marketing degree into something actually tangible post-grad? I have a lot of ambition and a desire to succeed, but I don’t know where to target this energy.

With this conundrum on my mind, I boarded a bus to New York City last week with 35 other undergrad women as a part of GW Women in Business’ annual New York networking trip. Throughout the two day trip, we visited seven different company sites and attended tours, panels, and had the opportunity to speak and network with current employees and executives. The companies spanned from a wide variety of industries, from the chic and minimalist offices of Theory and Tibi in the fashion world to the unbelievably modern and innovative Google flagship.

The trip taught me many things about the specifics of each company’s values, work environment, and more—but I had a couple of main takeaways from the trip as a whole. Firstly, almost every employee we spoke to arrived at their job through an “unconventional” route. Meaning, they didn’t necessarily seek out to land a job at their current company straight out of college. They all started from vastly different majors, companies, and backgrounds. However, the central thread tying all of their experiences together is that they constantly pushed themselves to be their best selves no matter where they were working and seized new opportunities when offered. This was incredibly reassuring and inspiring. I realized I don’t have to know exactly what I want to do right away, but if I work hard to succeed in whatever job I happen to be in, I know I will gain the resources to be able to figure it out and get there someday. 

The New York trip also taught me to trust my instincts when it comes to company culture. While all of the sites we visited were unique and wonderful environments in their own right, there were definitely certain ones in which I felt more at home. When looking for places you may want to work in the future, you have to trust your gut. Certain work environments will just feel right. Trust that. Certain ones might feel off-putting in a way you can’t quite describe. Trust that also. If a workplace doesn’t reflect your personal needs and values, then you won’t be happy there, no matter how positive their reputation is. 

Overall, I was able to leave the New York trip with not only a greater sense of what I may want to pursue as my career (advertising!?), but also reassurance that I don’t need to have everything figured out the moment I walk off the stage at graduation. Put yourself out there, take advantage of any opportunities that you come by, and trust your gut. Everything else will work itself out.
