Navigating Diet Culture During the Holidays

Read Time:2 Minute, 24 Second

The holiday season is always a time for celebration, happiness, and connecting with family and friends. Though this time of year is filled with joy in so many ways, it also can be emotionally triggering to those with eating disorders or those who struggle with their body image. Every day can feel like a battle with food for many people, and the holidays can often bring out the worst in our thoughts surrounding food, weight, and self-image. Whether it’s family members making comments on each other’s bodies or the emphasis on attending parties and the food that is served at them, these added pressures can negatively impact ourselves and our loved ones around us. Here are some things to keep in mind as you navigate diet culture during the holiday season.

Do not compromise your boundaries

It is so important to know your own personal boundaries in all aspects of your life, but during this time, you can set boundaries for yourself and others surrounding food and compliments or comments on people’s bodies. Do not be afraid to separate yourself from unhealthy conversations about the amounts of food your family ate, or whose body looks different from last year.

Allow yourself to enjoy

Remember the holidays emphasize food for a reason; food brings us together. Food gathers family and friends around a table, allowing them to create deeper connections with each other. Food is not only fuel, but it also can bring us happiness and comfort, especially around times of celebration. When intrusive thoughts about food take over, they remove us from the present and eliminate our ability to appreciate the joy around us. That being said, allow yourself to enjoy your grandma’s holiday cookies and enjoy the happy memories that go along with the food you eat.

Listen to your body

If you are someone who experiences bingeing or has Binge Eating Disorder, the holidays bring on a different challenge than those who experience more restrictive cycles of eating. The general increase in food consumption during this time can be triggering as well. Remember that one night of heavy eating is not going to affect your body. One night enjoying your favorite holiday treats will bring happy memories and connection with your beloved family and friends.

Think before you speak

It’s always important to remember that many people struggle with food and body image, and the battles they face are often invisible. Avoid and stop conversations about calorie counting, how much or little food one eats, and comments on changes or lack thereof in someone’s weight or body in general. Even if these comments are meant to be complementary, you never know how they may affect the recipient.

All in all, remember to take comfort in the upcoming holiday season and enjoy your favorite holiday foods!
