Last Wednesday started off like any other day, with the hopes of actually completing at least some of the things I needed to get done. Maybe it was the nice cold (actually ice cold) air blowing in my face on the way to my 9:35 class, but I was determined that I would go declare my major and minor. I was finally motivated to walk all the way to the advising building for CCAS and just sign a couple of forms, or so I thought.
For the entirety of my freshman year, I did not know that selecting your “intended major” when applying for this school, actually meant that you are technically still undeclared in the eyes of the university. However, even though I hadn’t actually declared my major, I had still been working on the credits and requirements needed for it. Around the middle of the second semester, I decided to check out degree map where I saw that the required courses I had taken for the Criminal Justice major appeared as “fallthrough courses.” I know right? So as confusion goes, I decided to go get some clarification on why it had seemed like I had just taken random courses for the hell of it. I went to seek information from an advisor and found out that you have to get an official form signed for the major or minor that you are trying to declare. Easy enough, or so I thought.
So, last Wednesday I made it all the way to the CCAS advising office from my class in Elliot, thinking that this would only take five minutes maximum. I walked in and asked if I could meet with an advisor so that I could formally declare a Criminal Justice major and Journalism minor. I was so excited.
When I entered the office (30 minutes before advising hours started), I learned that this process did not include a meeting. Instead, I had to get a form signed by the head of the departments for my major and minor.
Ugh, this now meant I had to walk even more than I had originally thought. I don’t like being outside in the
The department representatives and I collectively determined that in order to declare a major or minor, you are able to get the same sheet signed by both departments, but that means you would have to wait for each department head to actually sign it and then take it over to the other one. So, I thought it would be best to just get two
First, turn the sheet over. Before anyone signs anything, it is required that you sit down and plan out a tentative schedule for when you are going to take each course to satisfy all the requirements or credits needed. More time.
I finally got everything all filled out and made my way back over to CCAS advising, where conveniently, the sociology department was as well. Thank god this only took about ten minutes. Then, when all my forms were dated and signed I took the elevator down to the place where this whole journey had started. I was directed to the scanner in the back of the room. Apparently, I mistaken that the forms were not to be handed to anyone, you just had to scan them into the system and only then were you done with the process.
Here’s how you can declare a major or minor without the fuss:
- Pick up two forms
- Fill out the tentative course schedule on the back
- Go to each department to get the forms signed
- Bring the forms back and scan each into the system
It’s simple, but it was made so complicated.
