The confusing and seemingly never-ending midterm season is upon us, and for a lot of us, it’s really stressful. Grinding out papers, studying for tests, keeping up with extracurriculars, and trying to get sleep all at the same time is enough to make anyone’s head spin. As someone who’s pretty much in a constant state of anxiety, I’ve learned what does and doesn’t work in terms of midterms stress management. Of course, we’re all different, but from one GW student to another, here are some tips to get you through this next month or so in a peaceful and productive way.
Do get outside and take a study break! The weather has certainly been less than optimal for the past couple weeks, but it’s supposed to get warmer (and sunnier, yay)! My favorite way to decompress is with a monument walk. We get so caught up in our own lives and worries that we forget how amazing it is to live in D.C. If you can make it fit with your schedule, sunrises and sunsets on the mall are the best.
Don’t dorm study. There are so many other great places on and off campus for you to get your work done without the tempting distractions of your dorm. If I had a dollar for every time I started work, stopped, started cleaning out my drawers, tried to work again, and ended up cleaning the bathroom, I’d be a very rich woman. I know it’s hard to leave the dorm, believe me, but it’s a necessary evil. You’ll thank me later.
Do set healthy social media breaks! Emphasis on healthy – I’m not talking about an hour and a half pitfall into TikTok or your ex’s social media followers, I’m talking about 15 minutes or so to check in with your friends and the world. My personal hack is using the generic IPhone alarm to set my breaks – there’s nothing worse than that sound and it’s guaranteed to snap you back into focus.
Don’t write papers last minute. I know how hard it can be to get a head start, especially days in advance, but if you can get a solid paper draft 3-5 days before it’s due, you’re going to be in great shape. I always ask my roommate and my dad to read/edit my papers (they write much better English than I do). If you’re skeptical of the editing abilities of your family/friends, the writing center in Gelman is another great tool. As my very wise Development Politics professor once said, “nobody is above that.” It’s true! Why not boost your confidence (and most likely your grade)?
Do talk to your professors! It’s scary, I know, but they’re here to help us. Whether it’s confusion on that paper you haven’t started yet or a case of test-taking anxiety, talking to your professor can put your nerves to rest. They’re people just like the rest of us.
Don’t define yourself by your grades or your academic success. GW can be a little cutthroat – we’re all smart and here for a reason, yet, we keep trying to outperform each other. Remember that no matter your grade, you are capable, worthy, and you will keep moving forward. One bad grade (or even more!) does not define you or your future. Growing up, my mom and dad always asked me “did you try your best?”, and that’s ultimately all we can do: our best.
Remember to take care of your work but take care of yourself too! Before you know it, midterm season will be over. You got this!
