Okay, we’ve been home for over two weeks now: we’ve stayed inside, had a week of online classes, slept, and now I am ready to get back to school. Oh wait, why can’t we go back to school again? Because campus is closed for the rest of the semester!
Let me just preface this by saying, I have not dealt with this in the most cooperative nature. Don’t get me wrong, I love being home and not having to eat two pieces of toast for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. However, there’s something so exciting about living at school, being broke, pretending not to be broke, and doing everything with your best friends. Our lives and routines that we built for ourselves have just been ripped from us: how can we not go through a sad phase every once in a while? It’s been hard for everyone, but I am going to tell you some things I have done to help make it bearable.
Sleep until at least 10 a.m. everyday (unless you have early class) :
It sounds unproductive and lazy, I know, but the reality of it is that when we’re all at school, we get absolutely no sleep whatsoever. Between classes, student organizations, jobs, school work, seeing and interacting with people 24/7, our days don’t end until about one in the morning. So, I have taken it upon myself to catch up on all the sleep I lost at school. Well, if I’m being honest I still don’t go to sleep till two in the morning each night, but I make up for it by sleeping in.
Work Out:
If you know me, this is absolutely incredible, revolutionary, unheard of for me to be doing on my own.The laziness always gets the best of me. Now, with the opportunity to be lazy and bored for the majority of the day, I have found time to make sure that I am keeping my body healthy and active. The struggle is putting on the workout clothes, rolling out my yoga mat, and getting started; but the best part is you only have to move as far as off of your bed and onto the floor. Also, who doesn’t want to come back to school and blow everyone away, including yourself, with how fit you got.
Be Creative:
When I am at school it is hard to find the alone time to really reflect and focus on my passions and ambitions. I have a lot of ideas for what I would like to accomplish, but never seem to actually be able to concentrate on achieving any of them. However, being enclosed by the four walls of my room has given me the motivation to try some creative writing, painting, and styling. Being creative is a form of therapy, it helps to free your mind of constructive bounds that it is kept in when always thinking critically. Releasing these constraints on your mind allows for discovery and freedom even when you can’t actually go anywhere.
Watch A Good Show :
As I stated before, these are hard times. Even though we have a lot to be thankful for, it doesn’t mean the struggle with disappointment is initially any easier. There are going to be times throughout the next few weeks, months even, where you think that you are handling all of this really well, but then you slip up and feel sad – it’s hard not to be with everything happening in the world. If this happens, it is important that you have something to cheer you up and distract you.
I have been reminding myself of how good it feels to smile and laugh through watching my favorite shows. I have always said the best part about television is it gives you something to escape to, it makes you feel like you can take a break from whatever is going on in your life to be a part of something else for a little while. Find a funny show and watch it.
