DC Restaurant Week has just come to a close; a week-long promotion featuring hundreds of restaurants across the city offering up $22 three-course brunch/lunch and $35 dinner menus. We decided to stop by North Italia for brunch, located on Pennsylvania Ave just off campus. The restaurant serves up a mouthwatering variety of high-quality items, ranging from creamy and bright pesto to an indulgent and crave-worthy crispy french toast. You’ll be wanting to get your friends together (or just yourself, no judgment here) and make a reservation for next weekend ASAP.
Food Breakdown
Arancini (Sophia)
- crispy mushroom risotto stuffed with scamorza cheese & served with red sauce
This dish is essentially three fried balls of mushroom risotto on a bed of red sauce. While it falls under the appetizer section of the menu, this dish is rich and filling. As delicious as it was, I would recommend sharing it with at least one more person if this is the first course of a larger meal. When I cut the first one open, the crispy outside broke with a mesmerizing cheese pull. I was impressed by all of the flavors and textures and how well it held up throughout the brunch.
Arugula & Avocado Salad (Maya)
- lemon, avocado, extra virgin olive oil, grana padano
This salad is not going to change your life, but it was a perfect, light addition to this three-course brunch. The arugula was appropriately dressed – not too light or too heavy – and they certainly did not skimp on the avocado and high quality parmesan shavings. Nothing is more disappointing than getting past the first layer of cheese on a salad to discover nothing but sad, plain lettuce below. Fortunately, this salad contained thick shavings of parm on the middle and bottom layers as well. Get this if you want something light and somewhat healthy to munch on before diving into the main course.

Pesto Pasta (Sophia)
- gigli pasta, toasted pine nut, garlic, basil, crispy caper
When this dish first was placed in front of me, my eyes widened, my gaze narrowed, and my mouth most definitely started watering. This dish is gorgeous. First, I noticed the unique shape of the noodles. It is called gigli pasta which, in Italian means lilies – very fitting. After a few quick pics, I dove in. I got a bite of noodles, sauce, a caper, and a pine nut to experience all that it has to offer and I was sold! The saltiness of the capers and crunch of the toasted pine nuts complimented nicely with the al dente – “to the tooth”- pasta and delicious sauce. I was very impressed with the pesto because it was not too oily or loose, and held on to each perfect piece of pasta. This pasta grew to be more satisfying with each forkful!
Farmers Market Scramble (Maya)
- egg, butternut squash, roasted mushroom, broccolini, sweet potato, grana padano
If I had to pick a favorite dish of the entire meal, the farmers market scramble may have to be it. First off, the eggs themselves were well seasoned and packed with delicious seasonal veggies like roasted squash, assorted mushrooms, and scallions. Each consecutive bite remained complex and satisfying; everything I wanted out of a good scramble. The unexpected star of the show, however, were the breakfast potatoes served on the side. They were crisped up to perfection and doused in a generous coating of grana padano cheese. I often find myself passing on the potatoes that come alongside a main dish at a lot of brunch restaurants, but this is not a potato that should be ignored. Finally, the scramble and potatoes were served alongside two pieces of grilled garlic toast that I didn’t know I needed until I took a crispy, crunchy bite of one. This lovely meal suits vegetarian diets and is amazing if you are looking for a savory brunch.
Crispy Cinnamon French Toast (Sophia)
- fresh berries, mascarpone cream, vanilla maple syrup
I want to start by saying I have never really been a fan of french toast, but maybe it is because I didn’t grow up eating it often. In this case, I thought I would take a leap of faith and I am so glad I did. Not only was it crispy, it was also moist, dense, and not overly sugary. I was particularly excited about the mascarpone cream, however, when the plate came out, the warm toast was sitting on top of the cream, making it lose its fluff and chill. I would have liked to have the mascarpone on the side so I could control the cream to toast ratio for each bite and maintain the integrity of the dish. On a lighter note, the berries were a perfect addition and I would definitely recommend this sweet and complex dish.
Tiramisu (Maya)
- espresso-soaked ladyfingers, mascarpone mousse
It is honestly very difficult for a tiramisu to rise above “average.” Luckily, as a big tiramisu fan, “average” is still quite delightful to me. This tiramisu checked off all the major boxes – a rich, creamy mascarpone mousse, a present but not overwhelming coffee flavor, and an equal proportion of cream to ladyfingers. The dessert was topped off with a handful of crunchy little chocolate pearls, which added an unexpected and needed textural element.
