Duke’s Grocery is a popular new campus favorite (in 2000 Penn) that has people raving about their hearty portions and delicious food. Prior to going, I checked out a few of the reviews to see exactly what I was in for and what their menu looked like. Immediately, I was advised by Yelpers to try the “best burger” in D.C., also known as the Proper Burger according to their menu, so that’s exactly what I did. I have to preface my review by saying that when it comes to burgers, I do not mess around. Burgers may possibly be one of my all time favorite foods, so I consider myself to be a harsh critic when it comes to judging one.
This burger is nowhere near ordinary. It is loaded with angus beef, melted gouda, charred red onion, pickles, sweet chili sauce, rocket (apparently this is a type of sauce??), garlic aioli, and I decided to add avocado (it costs extra, but avocado is something I am always willing to drop a little extra cash for). All of this deliciousness was surrounded by a beautifully toasted brioche bun, which had my mouth watering before I had even placed my order.
When the food came, this burger pretty much took up half of the plate, but, I’m a girl who likes to eat and I was ready for the challenge. Oh, and I can’t forget to mention the tasty side of crispy fries that I ordered with it… I mean come on, you can’t order a burger without fries, right?!

For $13, this burger is well worth the investment and it will put you in a food coma for hours (in the best way possible, of course). I must first warn you by saying that eating this burger is one heck of a messy ordeal and it will undoubtedly leave you with a stain or two, but that’s a risk I am willing to take again. It was perfectly cooked and I can honestly say it’s the best burger I’ve had in D.C. yet, beating it’s competitor just down the street on campus, Burger Tap Shake. So, if there’s anything that you must take away from this, go give Duke’s Grocery a shot because I promise you, you won’t regret it!
Oh, and P.S… this may be a burger review, but my roommate ordered the mac & cheese and it was simply delicious.
