Our campus is full of charitable organizations that students can get involved with. As current college students, it seems impossible for us to donate at this point in our lives. We have expenses and loans, which makes giving to charity not something the average student can budget for. I interviewed members of One For The World, a GW org, to show how college students can get involved with philanthropy in a more realistic, attainable way.
One For The World is a national organization that aims to combat extreme poverty on a global scale– those who live under $1.90 per day. Around 10% of the world’s population are currently living in extreme poverty, resulting in disease, malnourishment, and child mortality. One For The World handpicks the most effective charities in the world– those who accomplish the most with the least amount of money– and connects its donors with these charities.
Leigh Payne, vice president of One For The World, stated, “In our spend and consume culture people often donate just assuming their money will be used well just because it’s going to a good cause. Sadly, that’s not always the case, but OFTW ensures that every dollar donated meets the most dire needs of the most impoverished.”
There are several charities within the One For The World network. Each year, 5 top charities are selected by a panel and deemed the most effective. After exploring these charities, my personal favorite would be GiveDirectly. The donations to this charity are simply transferred to people in need through a mobile device. These families typically make less than $0.65 per day, focused in Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda. Each recipient family can do whatever they please with that money, which I believe to be the most effective use of donation money. One For The World reported that direct cash transfers lead to “consumption, assets, business investment, and revenue.”
One For The World’s GW chapter began in the spring 2019 semester. Since then, it’s members and pledges have been on the rise.
“What’s different about One For The World is that we don’t just begin conversations about effective altruism or plan fun events. We walk away after each tabling knowing exactly how much we raised & exactly how many lives can be saved through that amount,” said Samantha Capriotti, co-president of the organization.
You may have seen One For The World’s table in District House some time in the last year. Members talk about the organization to passing students and ask them to pledge 1% of their future salary to an effective charity. In other words, students are not required to give any of their money now, but instead they create an account with One For The World and choose the date in which money gets taken out to be donated. Usually, that date is after the students’ graduation. So, rather than taking any of your money today, One For The World is flexible and allows you to donate effectively on your own terms.
“I think a lot of people the concept behind OFTW is confusing. Why doesn’t OFTW want money now? Why are we asking for a pledge for the future? OFTW is focused on making the absolute most impact on extreme poverty and this means, instead of taking small, immediate donations, we encourage students to pledge 1% of their future salary,” says Maddie Susi, marketing chair of One For The World. “You would be amazed by how little 1% means for us but how much it can do for others.”
