I know what you’re thinking: this must be some article written under the pretense that social media is bad and has no benefits, but bear with me. I promise this is not the case. 

When deciding to take a break from social media, I never thought that I would be writing this article nor did I really make it a taxing decision. It simply went as such: I woke up one Friday morning. The first thing I did was check my Instagram, as one does. In doing so though, I found myself seeing things and people that quite literally made me anxious as f*ck. So, I deleted every social media app I had and decided it was time for a cleanse (compulsive, I know). 

Easy is not the word I would use to describe it. In fact, it was actually a lot harder than I anticipated. At first, I would check my phone every few minutes only to find zero notifications and then I would long to download the apps. This, however, subsided after two or three days. 

Then, greatness came. I soon found myself not using my phone 24/7, as I had for years. Within a few days, a habit that had been so omnipresent was demolished. I found myself doing more things that I “never had time for” before: I started going to museums, going on walks, and even trying new things. 

Not only that, but for days on end I found myself having truly wholesome encounters with people on the street, in my classes, and even in the abnormally long Starbucks line. 

It’s easy now to see the ways in which I used my phone and social media as a crutch. Before, when I was in an awkward situation, Twitter was my best friend. When I didn’t want to see someone, looking down at my phone sufficed. However, the main thing that this social media cleanse has done, is force me out of my comfort zone. In that, I don’t mean to imply that social media needs to be dismantled. Though after this cleanse, I do think that moderation is key. 

It’s important to understand and admit that these apps have a dramatic pull on our daily lives. However, while I have had a good time taking a break and detaching from the social media world, I have noted key disadvantages. Namely, it’s not always the greatest feeling when all of your friends are talking about some tea that got spilled about your favorite celebrity and you don’t know the details. And when a new song from your favorite artist drops, you may not even know about it until a day after release. While it’s great to not use social media, it can almost feel like you’re missing out sometimes and that’s been the hardest part of it all. 

If you’re considering taking a cleanse, here is what I advise. First, take the cleanse; if you’re thinking about it, you probably really need it. Second, remember a cleanse does not have to be indefinite. If after a week you think you’re ready, download that app and post the thirst trap you know you want to. Lastly, just listen to yourself and make way for growth. Discomfort is common, but don’t let yourself get so wrapped up in detaching that you lose your focus. Sometimes cleanses work and sometimes they don’t, but if you’re thinking about it (and are willing to make the sacrifice), delete those apps and live your life outside of cyberspace.
