The Women’s March started in 2017 as a reaction to the election of President Donald Trump in November of the previous year. Since its founding, the march has become a place for women in cities across America to come together and voice their concerns on many social and political issues including climate justice, reproductive rights, and immigration, to name a few.
While many women march in solidarity to give their shared concerns more visibility, perhaps the most important goal of the march is to encourage each participant to incorporate these issues into their day-to-day lives, whether that is through educating themselves on a certain topic or taking more direct action to enact change.
Lots of current political topics were represented in the Washington Women’s March this Saturday, from trans rights, climate justice, conflict in Iran, reproductive rights, voting rights, and issues of intersectionality. The most extensive area of concern for the marchers was impeachment. With the President’s impeachment trial heading to the Senate for official review this coming Tuesday, many were adamant on his removal from office. From the crimes in question to his comments on his treatment of women, many marchers held grievances of Donald Trump’s fitness for office and voiced them through protest signs, some signs reading “Say it under oath, we dare you,” and “what goes on in his bat-sh*t crazy brain does not constitute policy.”
While the women’s march was noticeably smaller in size this year, there was no lack of spirit or enthusiasm among the crowd. The march started in Freedom Plaza with speeches from Women’s March board members, MLK’s son and family (Martin Luther King III and Arndrea Waters King), and a Chilean protest group. Replacing the previous march destination of the US Capitol, marchers took directly to the White House this year. Chants echoed throughout the crowd, uniting the first marchers with the marchers all the way in the back. It was a much-needed inspiring and uplifting atmosphere on a cold and rainy Saturday morning.
As students at GW and in DC, we should all be in tune with these issues that concern our country and its future. I would recommend looking into student orgs that align themselves with many of the core values that the Women’s March was founded on to facilitate change on our campus and in our city.
