It’s official, we are less than one week out from Election Day. And if your Instagram feed is anything like mine at the moment, it’s full of posts from friends, influencers, and celebrities telling you to vote. While I wholeheartedly agree with the widespread movement on social media to encourage voting, repeated exposure to anything on social media can frequently cause fatigue and leave us feeling overwhelmed. In this article, I hope to open up an honest conversation about why it is important for us as college students to vote, what stops many people from voting, and how to work with our friends and family to create a thorough voting plan.
Given the structure of the Electoral College in the United States, it is easy for people to adopt a somewhat cynical view about voting. Why should I vote if my state is going to be red or blue no matter what? How could my one, single vote truly influence an election? The answer lies not in the action of one individual, but in the actions of many individuals combined. In the 2016 presidential election, approximately 43% of eligible voters failed to fill out a ballot. That’s about 100 million Americans. And those 100 million people are not evenly distributed: a largely disproportionate share of young people ages 18-29, people of color, and low income people did not vote. The reasons behind this are complicated and largely systemic, including laws in some states making it increasingly difficult to register to vote, limiting the number of mail-in ballots, and widespread voter disenfranchisement amongst low income communities and communities of color. With such information in mind, it is critical to assess our available resources and make a plan to vote that suits our needs. By combining the individual decision to be motivated to vote and addressing the wider issues of voter disenfranchisement, millions more people could turn out to vote. If even a small share of the 43% of people who did not vote in 2016 opt to vote in 2020, the tides of national elections could shift greatly.
It’s not as simple, however, as just telling people to go and vote. Doing so ignores the deep-set background as to why so many people do not vote in the first place. To truly increase the amount of people to vote, people need access to the resources that will make it feasible for them to actually cast their ballot. The best thing that you as an individual can do is to be informed of your own voting options, and to encourage your friends and family to do the same. As college students who are mostly out of state living through a pandemic, voting options are more complicated today than ever. Vote.org and When We All Vote both provide a comprehensive list of voting resources, including checking your registration, locating your closet polling place, and informing you of your state’s specific voting laws. If you are eligible and haven’t yet cast your ballot this year, please look into these resources!
Politics right now are polarizing, all-encompassing, and affect everyone incredibly deeply. While your activism for the issues and communities you care about should not end with casting your ballot this year, voting represents one of the most foundational rights that we have and allows us to advocate for the change we want to see in our country. Both federal and local elections frequently come down to very narrow margins, and surprises in the way certain districts will vote are almost inevitable. Take the time to create your voting plan, talk to your friends and family about theirs, and cast your ballot to advocate for the future you want to see.
