If you’re the average millennial, chances are, you know what Photoshop is; and while it is not abnormal to use, posting articles that slam people, specifically celebrities for Photoshop fails has created a sense of humiliation towards it. Aside from outrightly humiliating them for these fails, people have also criticized its use for “perpetuating unrealistic beauty standards.” While this may be true, many critics fail to realize the potential Photoshop has in highlighting the fact that there is no one ideal body.
The Ideal Body Has Changed Throughout History
If you’ve ever gone to a fashion or textile museum, a typical display will show you a few mesmerizing pieces of clothing per period, followed by a short description of the year, designer, country, and the occasion it was made for. While these collections are aesthetically appealing, many exhibits fail to provide critical information explaining why displaying such pieces is so important. Although there are various reasons, such as how studying textiles can illuminate people on trading history, (i.e. The Silk Road) the thing that would always strike me was the various types of builds each piece catered to, reflecting varying socio-political environments. For instance, working their husband’s jobs in World War 1 sparked women’s desire for individuality and freedom. As part of this, women began to dress more gender-neutral: which was done by sporting short hair, “downplaying their waists, and wearing bras that flattened their breasts” (buzzfeed.com). That is also why you may see dresses from the 1920s look much different from even the 1910s.
The influence of socio-political environments on fashion and trends also holds true for body types. Extending on this, if in the 1920s, the ideal look was androgynous, then the desired body type of the decade would be a slimmer, flatter build. This is further illustrated by Cassey Ho, fitness blogger, and instructor, who purposefully Photoshopped her body to represent the ideal body of the 1400s, 1920s, 1950s, 1990s, 2000s, and current-day (which was 2018).

The results show there is no ideal body type.
The Dream Body Varies By Region
In their “Perceptions of Perfection Across Borders,” a UK drugstore asked 18 designers from different countries to reshape a woman’s body into what they thought was the ideal body for their country. What they found was that results varied drastically not only between regions but countries.
For instance, pictured below are the results from a Filipino and Chinese designer. Although their cultures, including beauty standards, vary vastly, considering that they are both Southeast Asian countries, it’s curious to see such drastic differences.

It should be noted that while this experiment may rely too heavily on participants, as a small sample skew results, the results may not be all-encompassing of what everyone views as the perfect body within that country. However, even if this is true, the experiment effectively displayed how different each person’s view of the perfect body is.
Bodytypes as a Status Symbol
Aside from socio-political environments, culture plays a role in defining the ideal body. Specifically, depending on both the time and what country you’re in, being heavier can be interpreted as good or bad. For example, in “central Africa thinness is undesirable and is seen as a sign of poverty, despair, and deprivation” (Andre Renzaho). Therefore, larger bodies indicate higher “social rank, status, and power” (Andre Renzaho). In America, larger bodies were also considered a sign of health up until the late 19th century.
Moreover, through Photoshop and a look into several political and cultural movements throughout time, it is evident that there is no such thing as one universal body type. However, as someone who continually struggles with body image, I understand it’s hard to not look at yourself critically; it should be noted I haven’t been formally diagnosed with an eating disorder. Furthermore, I hope this article can be a start to loving your body, and a way to start realizing that there is no such thing as a perfect body, because, like anything else in life, there is no such thing as perfection.
