The Fashion Trends I’m Loving for Valentine’s Day

This is slightly embarrassing to admit, but one of the things that I’m looking forward to the most for Valentine’s Day this year is planning the perfect outfit. What better way to celebrate your love than by looking absolutely fantastic? (Kidding. Sort of.) Whether you’ll be spending the day with your significant other or your group of besties, Valentine’s Day is the perfect opportunity to plan a themed, fun and flirty outfit that makes you feel confident. Here are a few of the trends—some classic, some more out of the box—that I can’t wait to see this year.

Colors

In my mind, a proper Valentine’s Day outfit needs at least a little bit of pink. However, pink can be a hard color to style. If you’re like me and your outfits normally consist of 99% neutrals, I  recommend adding a subtle pink accent somewhere in your outfit along with all other neutral pieces. Dark brown has been a very trendy color lately, and pairs beautifully with both ballet and baby pink. I would love to see a lot of this color combo this Valentine’s Day!

If you aren’t feeling the traditional, romantic Valentine’s Day sentiment, doing an all-black outfit is another fun way to go. Dressing in black with a dramatic red lip is a chic way to be a little bit contrarian.

Materials and Silhouettes

For Valentine’s Day, lace and other soft, flowy fabrics are an obvious choice. But hey, things are classic for a reason. This year, I am hoping to see outfits that mix lots of different fabrics and materials to create an ethereal, head-turning look. Leather has been trending for the last several seasons and looks stunning paired with lighter, romantic materials like lace and tulle.

Of course, it is still winter, which means dressing for warmth is still an important consideration. Luckily, the right sweater can be one of the sexiest outfit choices you can make. A simple outfit of jeans and a fuzzy, well-fitting sweater is a classic combination that will make you feel warm, comfortable AND absolutely stunning.

Finally, one of the pieces that I’m most excited to see this Valentine’s Day are corset tops. A lingerie-inspired silhouette is very on-theme and can still be modest and daytime-appropriate when layered underneath a button-down, and/or paired with pieces that have a bit more coverage. If you’re like me and impulse bought a corset top recently that you’ve yet to actually wear, February 14th is the day.

Accessories

To top off your ‘fit, I am absolutely obsessed with unapologetically cheesy, romantic jewelry. A couple of my favorite pieces currently are the Gorjana Parker Heart Necklace (which looks fantastic layered with other necklaces) and these freshwater pearl heart earrings from Madewell. Accessories that incorporate heart motifs are the perfect way to bring your outfit on-theme for Valentine’s Day and get yourself into the romantic spirit.
