Quick Guide to the Super Bowl

The Super Bowl is upon us – a fantastic American tradition where only American teams compete to determine the world champion in a sport in which they only play. Even with its American dominated audience, the most recent Superbowl had 167 Million viewers (and it wasn’t even the most watched Super Bowl). If you’re reading this article, you most probably don’t care about any of this, but the FOMO of this spectacle has forced you to learn enough to converse with friends at the Super Bowl watch party you got invited to. Here is a quick guide to the Super Bowl– I promise you will impress your friends with the knowledge you gain.

A quick Google search would give you the answer of who’s playing, but this article is meant to guide you further than any quick Google search will do. The Kansas City Chiefs, led by their star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, are back in their third Super Bowl in 4 years. Mahomes is set to win the MVP this year, which basically means he is the best player. You may note that the award isn’t given until a day before the Super Bowl, so there is no way this article is 100% accurate. My source is me and the countless hours I’ve spent away from friends and family on the couch watching football. Just trust me. Not only is their quarterback good, but their coach Andy Reid is also a football genius when it comes to the offense. When you watch the game, pay attention to the unique plays that the chiefs do. Their defensive coordinator, who is the coach in charge of defense, has two superbowl rings on his resume (fun fact: one of them was against Tom Brady when he was with the patriots).

Now let’s move on to the Eagles. They have a younger quarterback named Jalen Hurts that doesn’t really have any accomplishments to his name yet. He is pretty good, but the Eagle’s defense is what makes them competitive. I may be incredibly biased here, but I don’t think the Eagles are going to win. They had an easy path in the playoffs playing against subpar quarterbacks. In the National Football Conference (NFC) championship game against the 49ers, the 3rd string QB (backup of the backup) got injured and Josh Johnson (the backup of the backup’s backup) was in, and lost against the Eagles. It’s not the Eagles’ fault they faced bad teams, but it’s just something to keep in mind.

Pro tip: if the team you’re rooting for isn’t doing too well and the other team is, just blame it on the refs or coaching and see how quickly you gain the respect of your friends at the watch party.

Overall, this game is going to be great regardless of its outcome. Philadelphia is burning to the ground in a win or loss, Mahomes has potential to add to his historic resume, and it’s also the first time two brothers are playing on opposing teams (Travis and Jason Kelce; lucky mom!). It will be a great continuation of a beautiful American tradition that you would be foolish to miss.
