Amidst all the chaos, this year has brought one good thing – some fresh, new tunes. Some of my favorite artists who hadn’t released any music in a while dropped new albums. While life may be a little slower and more stressful during quarantine, at least we can enjoy some good background music.
One of my favorite albums from 2020 so far is “The New Abnormal” by the late 90s rock band, The Strokes. Their music includes elements of post-punk without the in-your-face, loud aspect of rock. They take a more mellow approach to typical indie rock. “The New Abnormal”, their first studio album in the last 7 years, doesn’t fail to embody their typical sound, but also has a few more modern touches to it. I would describe it as the perfect album to blast on a long drive and zone out to. Some of my favorite songs on the album so far include “The Adults Are Talking,” “Eternal Summer,” and “Bad Decisions”.
Another great release of 2020 is Tame Impala’s “The Slow Rush.” This psychedelic rock album is meant to challenge our concept of time and how it passes by. It’s meant to make us think about how life is whizzing by us and how we get so caught up in the little, unimportant things. All of his albums follow similar themes, but this one especially is the kind of music you can throw on if you’re in the mood for an existential crisis.
Coming in at a close second for my favorite album of the year is “Mariposa” by rapper Felly. Felly makes more mellow, chill, surf rap. Felly’s music creates a perfect mixture of reggae and soul with classic hip-hop and rap, producing super unique beats. His new album is much more raw and uncut than his previous, making it feel like you’re in the studio with him.
My all-time favorite album this year is “Circles” by Mac Miller. Full of unreleased music he was working on right before his passing, “Circles” includes lots of unedited and mellow pieces. I normally don’t like when unreleased music from late artists is edited into a full studio album. It seems unfair to me to release their music that they didn’t deem as ready to release. The album might not meet what the musician’s expectations for their music were. However, “Circles” is a perfect exception from this. This album fully embodies what I believe Mac would’ve wanted it to do and it gives fans a chance to hear his more organic, softer side for the last time.
