Panhellenic Recruitment Tips and Tricks – The GW Local
Read Time:5 Minute, 11 Second

By Molly Kaiser and Maya Konings

It’s no secret that Panhellenic recruitment can be stressful. It’s six, 12- hour days of uncertainty, nonstop socializing, and smiling at strangers. However, there are ways to navigate recruitment to make it the best experience possible with *hopefully* the best result. The process can be incredibly rewarding when you find a community of sisters who share your values, passions and inspire you to be a better version of yourself. Read on for our tips on how to make recruitment the best experience possible.

We’ll first start with vocabulary terms you might run into during the Panhellenic recruitment process:

PNM: Potential new member. Any individual who is not affiliated/hasn’t been previously affiliated with any Panhellenic chapters.

Pi Rho Chi: AKA, your best friend and most valued resource during recruitment. These individuals are sorority women who have temporarily disaffiliated from their Panhellenic chapter on campus to help run recruitment by providing unbiased advice to PNMs throughout the recruitment process. They are there to help you. They also manage logistics like prohibiting technology use during recruitment.

Party/round: A party or a round is each session you spend with a chapter in the Marvin Center. On day one, you’ll have 11 parties/rounds since there are 11 Panhellenic chapters on campus. This number will vary each day depending on how many chapters you get called back to.

Ranking: Ranking comes at the end of the day. This is when you evaluate which chapters you like the best and rank them accordingly. If your preferences coincide with theirs, you’ll be called back to chat with that chapter again the next day.

Our Advice

#1: Be Open-Minded

It’s inevitable that you’ll enter recruitment with preconceived notions and stereotypes about each Panhellenic sorority on campus. However, it’s best to abandon these ideas as much as you can as you go through the recruitment process. You might find that you really mesh with a sorority that you thought you wouldn’t like, or don’t know much about. By going into recruitment with your mind already made up about what houses you will like or dislike, you are potentially closing a door on a sorority that could be a perfect fit for you. Do your best to tune out your roommate’s gossip on which houses are “top” and enter each round with the mindset that this could potentially be your new home.

#2: Take Care of Yourself

This might be the most important tip of them all – take care of yourself! You can’t bring the best version of yourself to each party unless you are properly hydrated, well-rested and fed. Remember to eat a good breakfast that will keep you energized throughout the day. Start with a cup of coffee to stay perky, if that’s your thing. Bring healthy snacks like granola bars and nuts to keep you going throughout the day. In order to organize your thoughts and minimize stress about which house you might end up in, make sure to be reflective. This can take many forms, whether it’s calling a family member, discussing the process with a trusted friend who isn’t going through recruitment (since you’re not supposed to discuss with other PNM’s), or writing in a journal.

#3 Be Engaged and Ask Questions

One of the most important things you can do during the actual rounds of recruitment is to be engaged. Being excited during your conversations, asking questions, and maintaining positive body language all indicate that you actually want to be there. Go into the process with three topics you’re comfortable talking about: maybe something your super passionate about, your favorite hobby, your favorite things to do in D.C. or your favorite coffee shop. Stick with topics that you feel confident talking about for about ten minutes. These will help drive your conversations and will help you get in a rhythm when talking to different members of each chapter. That’s not to say you should sound rehearsed, but like any interaction or interview, someone who’s evaluating you would want you to come prepared. Even when you’re in the last rounds of the day and you’re exhausted, simply being present when talking to sisters puts your best foot forward and reflects well on you. They are equally as exhausted, so you might as well make the most of it. Additionally, don’t be afraid to ask questions. In fact, questions are encouraged! Sisters will be thrilled that you truly care and want to learn more about their chapter.

#4: Look for the House That Challenges You

Obviously, you should feel comfortable in any chapter that you may want to join. However, when it comes time to decide which house is going to be your future home, look for somewhere where you could see opportunities for personal growth. Maybe you really admire how passionate someone in a chapter is or how positive and energetic they are. Follow the chapter that energizes you and makes you feel good about yourself. If you let it, your sorority will be a core community of women who will support, inspire, and challenge you for your entire college experience. Choose a house that makes you truly want to become a better version of you, not an entirely different version of yourself.

 #5: Be Yourself

Yes, I know this is possibly the most cliche piece of recruitment advice you could possibly receive, but it’s really SO important that we couldn’t not include it on this list. You have nothing to gain by acting anything less than genuine. Sisters are often able to notice if you are being inauthentic, but even if they don’t notice, it only means they’re basing their opinions on a false version of you. If you’re not being your true self, you could end up permanently in a sorority filled with people you won’t feel comfortable around. The entire point of recruitment is to find the best sorority for you, not for someone that you’re pretending to be.
