Subdued music emanates outside the Shenkman basement every other Friday night. Upon entering through a door brightly labeled “SMC,” an understated chord, or muffled lyric becomes the crisp, passionate vibration that blankets the cozy, packed room of students and musicians alike. A yellow Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour poster hangs above them, adjacent to the weathered, chocolate-leather couch. Technicolor lights taped to the intricate blue tapestry illuminate the bassist as she softly plucks The Grateful Dead’s Sugaree. Students groove and sway their heads to Bob Weir’s melody. This dimly-lit, yet colorful scene is George Washington University’s Open Mic Night.
“Come get closer! We all love each other here at the Open Mic,” says Jacy Case, performer and founder of the Open Mic Night, encouraging the audience to make a little extra room for the students who just walked in. Case and the Students’ Music Coalition (or SMC, a student org) began expanding the music scene on campus since she started the Open Mic Night as a sophomore in 2019; an event open for anyone to perform, primarily music. “We have so many talented artists here in Corcoran and are studying art, but also in SEAS and in the Business School that don’t really have an outlet to do their art the way that they have time for. Having a space where that’s possible is beneficial to GW,” said Case. Her goal? “Making the music and the arts community accessible,” Case said.
Each Friday show features a range of work. Every flavor of music can be heard; from SZA to Bill Withers, giving students the opportunity to cover famous classics and share their original work.
“One of the coolest things ever is when someone comes to the Open Mic and performs an original song. That by far, is the most amazing feeling,” Case explained. “Providing a platform for artists to sing their original content is by far the most amazing part of the Open Mic.”
AJ Peoples, a senior at George Washington University made that evident performing some of his own work, energizing the close-quarters and setting the mood of the SMC room once the mic was in his hands. “But what if it’s just me and you?” sings Peoples, sharing an original song “Friends?” about his strained romance. It became clear that many of the students’ performances were windows into the people behind the guitar or piano, disclosing identity in the music they play, in the lyrics they write, and the chords they strum.
It’s a place of individual artistic expression, but also one of association in sharing the social vulnerability and risk of presenting your talent and your work. There’s union in that.
When asked about her positive experiences with the Open Mic, the founder elaborated on her joy of people sharing their compositions: “[Most performers] wouldn’t have shared their music otherwise. Sure, it’s a lot easier now to put things on Spotify and Soundcloud but people aren’t always doing that,” said Case. “It’s hard. It’s scary. I think the Open Mic community is really open and I’m trying to make it a place where people feel comfortable to share their art.”
