It’s finally spring in D.C., and that means one thing: cherry blossoms. Nothing gets D.C. residents more excited than thousands of cherry blossom trees nearing peak bloom. However, even though the trees’ peak bloom only lasts around a week, D.C.’s celebration of the cherry blossoms extends throughout the entire spring. Here are my recommendations for ways to celebrate cherry blossom season and set the tone for a happy and bright springtime.

Places to See the Blossoms 

If you haven’t already gotten out to see the cherry blossoms, don’t wait any longer! The blossoms begin to fall off as fast as they appear. The tidal basin is where the largest concentration of cherry trees are and is a classic spot for experiencing the full effect of the blossoms. I recommend going early in the day to avoid the crowds. If you’re looking for a less busy location that still has beautiful blossoms, head up to Georgetown around the Dumbarton Oaks area. This underrated spot is a great place to see some gorgeous trees.

Cherry Blossom Themed Treats

Cherry blossom season in D.C. is about more than just the trees themselves. Businesses all across the city have mastered the art of limited-edition cherry blossom-themed goods and services. As a marketing student, it’s truly genius. Here’s a few offerings to check out even after the blossoms begin to fade:

Residents Cafe and Bar 

Through mid-April, the entire outdoor patio area of Residents Cafe and Bar in Dupont Circle is decked out in a whimsical cherry blossom theme, with overhead blossoms hanging from the terrace. The decor is accompanied by seasonal cherry and springtime cocktails (and mocktails!) to complete the experience. I got the sakura spritz cocktail when I visited (which came with edible flower petals floating inside!) and it was a perfect refreshing drink to celebrate springtime. 

Sakura by Rewind

Yes, this recommendation is inside Rewind, the lounge attached to Decades. I know, I can’t believe I’m recommending that anyone voluntarily visits Decades after first semester freshman year either. Don’t come for me. At least not until you’ve given Sakura a chance. Sakura is a cherry blossom pop-up (around until May 1st) serving Japanese-inspired small plates and cocktails. Of course, the cherry blossom themed decor is impeccable and the drinks are unique and delicious. 

Georgetown Cupcake 

I’ve been working at Georgetown Cupcake for almost half a year now, and in that time I’ve eaten a lot of cupcakes. So I know what I’m talking about. One of Georgetown Cupcake’s seasonal flavors for April is the cherry blossom cupcake – which is a vanilla cupcake with cherries baked into the batter and a cream cheese frosting. Trust me when I say this cupcake is super tasty and really gets you in the spring mood. Be sure to place your order online in advance since the store currently doesn’t take walk-in orders! 

South Block 

While the on-campus location of South Block remains closed, the Georgetown location is open and just a short walk away from the GW campus. The walk will be well worth it to try the seasonal cherry blossom bowl, which is made with a blend of pitaya, guava, and mango and topped with granola, strawberries, cherries, and honey. This bright pink bowl will surely put you in the springtime mood.
