Contrary to popular belief, Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be about that perfect moment you get to finally tell your boyfriend or girlfriend you’ve loved them all along. The day is about love, all kinds, which extends past everything romantic. The day is about self love, love of your friends, your family, all the relationships and connections that you have or had in your life. The day is just a day in itself, it can’t tell you how to celebrate it. So, if you’re single and thinking this day isn’t your day, you are wrong. Not only should everyday be your day, but Valentine’s Day should be just another one to celebrate every single type of love you’ve been blessed with having.
But… if you need some more specific tips, here they are:
Spend this day with yourself
To love yourself is arguably one of the most important and essential forms of love. This day can take on the form of nothing other than a reflection of this and celebration of who you are. Take the day to treat yourself well, meditate, take a long bath, eat lots of chocolate (that you bought because you’re independent who cares), journal, or watch a movie at home since no one wants to see those sappy couples making out in the back of the movie theater. Whatever you do, treat you and only you!
Go out with your friends
Who says this day even matters, it still is a Friday night. Go out and have fun like you usually do, just while you are doing it appreciate the people that you are with and all that they have done or provided for you in your life. Bros over hoes or sisters before misters, and all that.
Take a day trip
If you are debating staying at home shoveling ice cream into your mouth while the tears spill into the carton because you just finished watching The Notebook, drive far away and just keep going. Gather all your friends, maybe family members that live close by, and get out of town. The most incredible experiences are when you are traveling and trying new things with those who matter most to you. Whether it is a ten minute uber ride to Arlington, Virginia, or hoping on a train to go to New York City, do it!
Make fun of the cheesy couples
You might be automatically thankful that you don’t have to drop some cash for your boyfriend or girlfriend so that you guys can make this one day more special than the others, even when you should ultimately be doing that everyday. Well, if that is the case then spend the day noticing all those cheesy people being sappy and just have fun with it. They can try to make you think that you are missing out, even when you could care less, so just entertain yourself with all the craziness around!
This day comes down to what you make of it. One thing to do is tell the people in your life how much you love and are thankful for them, whether that be a friend, family member, coworker, or anyone else. I guarantee you are thriving without that romantic relationship, you just got to realize it!
