“As long as he is in the race, he has my support,” Alejandro Arango, co-founder of GW Students for Bernie said on Saturday regarding the presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.
GW Students for Bernie had their first general body meeting this Saturday. Approximately 35 students turned out voicing their support for Bernie Sanders in the Democratic Primary. The meeting addressed topics of canvassing, campaigning, and preparing for the upcoming Iowa caucuses. After the meeting, I had the opportunity to sit down with Arango and talk about his passion for politics and his support of Bernie.
Arango is a first-year transfer student and junior at GW, majoring in International Affairs; for him, much of his support for Bernie stems from the 2016 election and his upbringing.
“My ‘WhyBernie?’ story probably starts in 2016, really when I went to a rally in Manchester,” he said. “I think at that point if Bernie would’ve asked us in the crowd to flip a car, we would’ve flipped a car. He was a captivating force. In terms of values, that started closer to home. I grew up in the small southern city of McAllen, Texas, about 15 minutes from the border. McAllen like many other Texas border cities deals a lot with the recent large flow of asylum seekers, refugees, and immigrants traveling from the Northern Triangle, countries like Nicaragua, Guatemala, etc..
“I came back home one summer to start volunteering with this amazing organization called ‘Angry Tías and Abuelas;’ last year they were given the RFK Human Rights Award, in D.C. The organization does a lot of work with asylum seekers on the border, they’ll be at the bridges, they bring food and tents since often what ICE and Homeland Security will do is they will leave people on the other side of the border and will not process their political asylum applications and just leave them on the Mexican side. Often times, there are gangs that will take advantage of that and kidnap people and hold them for ransom against their family members back in the Northern Triangle. To make a long story short, the human rights crisis at the border really hits close to home for me, and while I think no candidate is going to say that they are not either going to reform, abolish, or hold ICE accountable for the human rights violations it’s committed, I think that there is no candidate that I feel as confident will address quickly what is happening at the border as Bernie Sanders,” Arango said.
Additionally, when Arango discovered that GW had organizations for most of the leading democratic candidates except Bernie, taking the initiative was almost second-nature for him, something that needed to be done.
For Arango and many others, policies are just a factor of the support, consistency is the real base.
At the GW Students for Bernie meeting, many students noted their presence was due to Bernie’s lifelong commitment to the policies that really matter to students. These students were not alone, their leader also noted Sanders’ consistency.
“Not only has he been saying the same thing, he’s also looked the same. Visually consistent and intellectually consistent,” he said. “If I had to boil it down to one thing for why I think he is going to win, it is his consistency, his real sense of understanding the issues, as well as the humanity behind the issues.”
While the organization is relatively new on campus, their Instagram page has already gained many followers—of the candidate-centered orgs it is only surpassed by GW students for Pete, which also has the most followers of the candidate-centered organizations.
Attending the meeting, the one thing that really struck me about GW Students for Bernie was both their connection to the national campaign and their passion to get things done. By the end of the meeting, many students were already desperately trying to plan phone banks and events to help bring about Bernie support and policies.
