Five Ways to Celebrate Autumn in the District

Read Time:2 Minute, 24 Second

By Tessa Barbeau

Living in the middle of a city during autumn can lead to a craving for all things fall. Luckily, there are plenty of options across Washington D.C. for you to check out. Here are my top 5 picks for things to do (actually located in the city!!!) for this autumn.

  1. Fall-o-ween at Common Good City Farm

Common Good City Farm, is an urban farm located on V street. On October 30th, they are hosting “Fall-o-ween,” an event for people of all ages. There will be several fall activities to participate in like a pumpkin patch, painting pumpkins, a costume contest, and more. Later in the night, there will also be karaoke. This is a great way to spend the night before Halloween, and a way to experience autumn, within the parameters of Washington, DC.

  1. Take a stroll through Georgetown

If there is one part of DC that knows how to celebrate the autumn months, it’s Georgetown. Porches are decorated with pumpkins, ghords, and ghosts; doors have well decorated wreaths and handrails are covered in cobwebs. It’s a convenient walk from campus— grab a coffee and stroll through the neighborhood! The peak time to participate in this activity seems to be the early morning hours to avoid the usual M Street crowds. Alternatively, try a dusk walk on the night of October 31st!

  1. District Doughnut

If your idea of fall indulgence involves food, you’re in luck! District Doughnut located on the Wharf is the perfect place to satisfy your cravings. With an extensive seasonal list of fall flavored donuts, including apple cider, there are plenty to try. Test out all the autumn flavors!!

  1. Dupont Farmers Market

Located directly within Washington, DC, the produce offered at Dupont’s Farmers Market is a great option for those wanting apples and apple cider. There are plenty of stands from local farms that sell their produce every Sunday. Situated right next to the Dupont Circle metro station, it’s a quick walk from campus and a guaranteed activity for every Sunday morning from 8:30am to 11:30am. Until November 23rd, Freshfarm, the company that sponsors Dupont’s Farmer’s Market, also hosts a market right next to the Foggy Bottom metro station. Located on campus, this is a great option for students who want to use GWorld and get home grown fruits and vegetables.

  1. Hike on the Billy Goat Trail of Rock Creek Park

Rock Creek Park is a great option for those that want to feel like escaping the city. A great place to see the leaves change and get some exercise, the Billy Goat Trail offers views of the fall foliage and the Rock Creek river. There are extensive trails that Rock Creek Park offers, so feel free to browse their maps for more options.
