Fashion Hits or Misses at the 2022 Oscars

Awards season is upon us and while some focus their energy on nominations and catching up on the latest films, others look forward to the fashion. The Oscars took place on March 27th, bringing together some of the world’s biggest names in the entertainment industry. The red carpet is the place to bring your best, and many celebrities did just that. However, while most looks seemed to win over the fans at home, others did not elicit the same reaction. Here are some of the carpet’s best and worst looks of the night.

Glamour Magazine

Zendaya

Zendaya’s glittery Valentino Haute Couture ensemble sparked mixed reviews. Personally, I think the silk-button down crop top paired with the silver skirt is an unexpected combo that she pulls off well.  However, while Zendaya’s red carpet looks are often among the best of the night, her later worn Vanity Fair party look clearly topped it with a very flattering silhouette along with her classic hair and natural glam makeup combo.

Today

Andrew Garfield

Andrew Garfield sported a rich wine-colored velvet suit by Saint Laurent, accompanied by a sophisticated bowtie and shoes. The Best Actor nominee always comes dressed to the nines with each event he attends. It is always great to see when male celebrities take on a more elevated look rather than the simple black tuxedo, and Andrew brought elegance with this luxury velvet suit. Though the Tick Tick Boom star may not have brought back the award for Best Actor this year, he stole the show on the red carpet.

Kristen Stewart

The Best Actress nominee’s outfit did not seem to stun crowds with her custom Chanel blazer and shorts. Kristen’s red carpet looks often spark conversation and this Oscars look was just the same. Many have debated the question: Is it okay to wear shorts to formal events? While I personally love ensembles that push the envelope, I think there could have been a better way for Kristen to incorporate more nontraditional elements into her formal attire. The silhouette of the blazer coupled with the low neck button-down is a great foundation, but a pair of structured trousers could have sealed the deal.

Vanity Fair

Ariana DeBose

Ariana DeBose worked her Pierpaolo Piccioli for Valentino attire in bright red. As a Queer actress, Ariana looks for ways to stand out and make intentional choices to push back on gender norms in formal clothing. Though it is considered cliche to wear red on the red carpet, Ariana owned this Valentino moment. The structured trouser along with the corset style top perfectly complemented each other. Taking home the win for Best Supporting Actress, Ariana’s look was fit for a winner.

US Magazine

Julia Fox

Though Julia Fox may have been Josh Safdie’s muse, her dress did not garner the same sentiment. This ensemble was created by Swedish designer Han Kjobenhavn, gaining lots of attention from the fashion community, as well as commenters online. Julia wore this look to the Vanity Fair after-party where many other celebrities rocked their best looks of the night, even more so than on the red carpet. While unique fashion choices are greatly appreciated, Julia’s look seemed as if it was more for shock factor rather than taking a respectable risk.

Though not every look was a total hit, overall, the Oscars red carpet always brings some of the best fashion game. Congratulations to all of the nominees and winners!
