Many of you, like myself, probably took the news of GW going all online pretty hard. Ever since it was announced on July 27th, the day my private Snapchat story was spammed with complaints, I’ve been passing through a grief cycle — feeling fine one day and incredibly frustrated and helpless the next.
While the university certainly made the right decision in protecting students and the health and safety of D.C. workers, residents, and families; it’s totally normal, and totally okay, to feel upset about not having a Fall semester in person. Hopefully this article will inspire you (myself included) to take the multitude of different energies we’re feeling and channel them towards something meaningful. Having disappointments and struggles only makes the little victories that much sweeter, and I know that once we’re all back on campus, we’ll appreciate D.C., GW, and the people around us more.
While this article may speak more to people like myself stuck in their childhood bedrooms for the semester, I hope that everyone can take something from this.
Online classes suck. It’s hard to focus, there’s the lingering possibility of connectivity issues, breakout groups are so awkward, and if you’re in a different time zone, GW basically said, “good luck!”
What we’ve been going through the last couple of weeks isn’t the GW experience that we dreamed of when we sent in our deposit. Many of us had orgs we were involved in on campus and many of those just don’t work from home. At the end of the day, things can’t be the same as they were in person. I can’t deny that. However, I’ve found a few tips and tricks that have made it a little easier to navigate this difficult time.
Separate your sleeping/relaxing space from your work space.
This is so important. Even if you don’t have a ton of space to work with where you are, make sure that you aren’t going to online class from your bed. Set up a desk or sitting area with things that make you feel good. It’s a great way to separate work from rest. You’ll work better if it’s not also where you sleep and you’ll certainly sleep better if it’s not also where you work.
Work FaceTimes into your weekly schedule!
Although I have always been very anti-FaceTime, I’ve come around to it during the pandemic. Seeing your GW friends and keeping in contact with people who are going through the same thing you are will return some sense of normalcy to your routine and your social life.
Go for walks!
Even if it’s just a quick 10 minute walk between your classes, moving your body and clearing your mind for a few minutes will replenish your energy and hopefully give you more momentum to finish your work and online meeting obligations. If you’re not a fan of walking, I recommend yoga or meditation — they have the same great benefits without having to leave the house.
Keep a calendar right in front of you.
Since March, I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve gotten caught up in baking or rewatching Glee for the 5th time and totally forgot about a meeting, an interview, a deadline or any obligation. Without in-person classes, it’s easier to lose track of time and forget to log on. Whether you use the reminders app, Google Calendar, or write things on a post-it note daily like myself, put everything in your calendar (As soon as you’re done reading this! Do it!).
Get dressed!
Admittedly I haven’t been very good about this, but even just changing out of the shirt you slept in can refresh your energy, make that work/relax distinction easier for you, and will probably make you feel better about having your camera on for 1.5 hours (P.S.- Old Navy and Aerie always have good sales if you’re looking for a comfortable new online class fit).
Final disclaimer: everyone is different, which means that our bodies and minds work in different ways. Maybe what I’ve found to work for me doesn’t work for you and that’s ok! This list was meant to get you thinking about how to make online classes a little bit easier on you and it is in no way a completed list. As we move on to the middle of the semester, I want you all to know that you are not alone in your frustration, sadness, or disappointment, and all of those feelings are valid!
Find the silver lining in every situation, even if it’s as bad as the one we’re in right now, and surround yourself with good people and good energy. You can do it!
