The city has probably felt like a ghost town, from the closed museums to reduced restaurant and store hours. Many of our favorite D.C.-based activities are out of commission, but that doesn’t mean the city is out of things to offer. If you’re spending your spring break here in D.C., here are some hidden gems to check out on your next outing.
Catch a sunset at East Potomac Park
Just past the Jefferson memorial, East Potomac Park has an amazing view of the sunset. It’s also great for your photo ops: the park faces the Wharf waterfront. Accessible by walk, car, or a quick metro ride, this is one of the simpler things on the list. Bonus points if you support a local business on the Wharf for dinner/dessert if you’re there!
Buy some houseplant friends at Ginkgo Gardens
With the weather warming up and the days getting a little brighter, it’s optimal plant growing season. If you’re looking for a relatively easy and affordable way to spice up your living space, Ginkgo Gardens is a seriously amazing plant store. Located between Navy Yard and Capitol Hill, this one’s a bit of a hike. I promise it’s worth it.
Have a healthy (and insta-worthy) meal at Zeleno!
I haven’t even been here yet, but it made the list. It’s been all over my TikTok and Instagram feed. D.C.’s newest smoothie bar Zeleno has toasts, açaí bowls, smoothies, sandwiches, and coffee. It has 20 five star reviews on Google, so I’d venture to say it’s worth a visit. Located in Dupont Circle, this would be great with a walk along Embassy Row on a sunny spring day.
Union Market Rooftop
I also just found out about this one. I’ve been to Union Market so many times and literally did not know that they had a spacious (and COVID-safe) rooftop with gorgeous skyline views. Union Market is a great trip anyways- with lots of restaurants, independent shops, and markets, there’s something for everyone. If you check out the rooftop, there’s also an outdoor bar and restaurant!
The DuPont Underground
Underground in DuPont Circle’s old streetcar station, there’s a museum! Every weekend, DuPont Underground sells tickets for their monthly installations. Through the week of spring break, the February Black Creatives collection will be on display with art and performances from Black creators and community organizations.
Big Bear Cafe
Cutest. Outdoor. Dining. Ever. If you don’t believe me, look it up. Located within walking distance of the Shaw-Howard University Station, everything at Big Bear is locally sourced. They have a pretty extensive breakfast and lunch menu- I’d highly recommend it. Plus, who doesn’t love supporting local businesses?
Urban Roast
Another place that’s been all over my feed, Urban Roast is a cafe and cocktail bar most famously known for their s’mores. Now that it’s bearable to be outside, this is a great way to get together with friends while still being COVID-safe. Plus, Urban Roast is in the Chinatown area, which is a little closer to campus.
Roosevelt Island
If you’re looking for a way to unplug and have some alone time over the break, you’re not alone. Online classes are incredibly draining and our weather for the past couple weeks has made outdoor activities relatively undesirable. Hopefully, spring break will be filled with warmer and sunnier days. If you’re like me and looking for a more nature-based break, Theodore Roosevelt Island is the perfect place. Within walking distance of Georgetown and GW campus, there’s no reason not to include this in your week. It’s serene, quiet, and removed from the chaos of the city. If you go, make sure to wear the right footwear- learn from my mistakes.
Rock Creek Park
Another suggestion for you nature-inclined spring breakers: Rock Creek Park. The park has beautiful hiking and biking trails, old architecture, and amazing views. This would be a great trip with friends- definitely a bit of a longer hike than Roosevelt Island. This is another far trip- the Van Ness station will get you close.
Hopefully this list inspires you to fill up some of your empty days over spring break. D.C. is a really cool city with so many different areas- each different from the last. Get out of the Foggy bubble! There’s a lot more to D.C. than our 9 blocks of campus and especially during these times, it’s important that we make the most of our time here.
