A Summer in Color: the GWL Warm Weather Style Guide

I was thinking long and hard about what I wanted my last article of the semester to be, and I came to the conclusion that it was only fitting that I close this year out with a style guide for spring and summer. It honestly feels like just yesterday that I was writing my 2020 fall fashion guide. But here we are – another semester over, this time finishing out the school year with warm weather, a hopeful end to zoom classes, and the Johnson & Johnson vaccine pulsing through my veins. Here’s to brighter, safer, and more stylish days ahead.

Trend #1: Tennis Skirts

If you read Kaleigh’s Y2K fashion trends article, you know that any and all 2000s-inspired mini skirts are in for this summer, and that includes tennis skirts. I’m not going to lie, I stayed far away from tennis skirts for a long time after my 14 year old self paired her white American Apparel skirt with a Tumblr-inspired tattoo choker. For summer 2021, just pair your tennis skirt with anything cropped. I went with a ribbed cropped tank top and my favorite orange jacket to get myself into the bright, warm-weather mood.

Trend #2: 90s Denim

It’s official – the long reign of skinny jeans is coming to an end. I honestly never thought we’d see the day. Despite being a hard-core skinny jeans stan for years, I’m finally coming around to the trend of looser, 90s-inspired denim. This high-waisted pair from Abercrombie instantly gives a cool-girl vibe to any top you choose to pair it with. Here, I went with a yellow checkered top and some oversized sunglasses to complete the 90s vibe.

Trend #3: Small, Colorful Prints

This season, I’ve finally been inspired to incorporate more color into my neutrals-heavy wardrobe. One of my favorite pops of color lately has been in the form of small, fun prints like the pink floral one on this Princess Polly skirt. Prints like this are simply just fun and carry the carefree, happy vibe that I’m hoping to take into summer 2021. I finished the look with another ~trendy~ Princess Polly top that ties up on the sides and my dad’s old Levi’s jacket.
