Despite the pandemic grinding many aspects of life to a halt, Georgetown has seen a large number of new businesses popping up over this past year. One such business is the brand new Foxtrot Market on Wisconsin Ave, which is described as a “curated convenience store.” While about the same size as your average 7/11, Foxtrot Market feels nothing like the type of convenience store you are likely familiar with. The natural light-filled store contains a coffee bar, gourmet grab-and-go lunch options, and an interesting and slightly confusing mix of niche local and name-brand pantry staples, ice cream, and wine. I decided to take a trip to Foxtrot Market to check out the new concept and review some of its more unique items.
Walking into Foxtrot Market, I at first felt like I was inside a trendy coffee shop. The coffee bar is set up prominently in the middle of the store, plants and exposed brick adorn the space, and there were several people working away on their laptops. However, all around the perimeter, things looked more like a typical grocery or convenience store. About a third to half of the offerings appeared to be from local brands that I had never seen in any major grocery chain before. I had a lot of fun exploring the local offerings, particularly the shelf dedicated entirely to hand-poured scented candles. Honestly, after seeing this section at Foxtrot, I would argue that a fancy candle shelf is something that all convenience stores should have.
In the back of the store, I began exploring what I can best describe as the pantry section. This area of the store baffled me in the shockingly wide range of product offerings packed into just a few small shelves. Initially, there was something just so unsettling to me about a gourmet sourdough-making kit being shelved right above a case of Pop Tarts and Twinkies. However, it is clear that Foxtrot is trying to appeal to a wide range of preferences even in its narrow product range, emphasizing why it describes itself as a “better kind of convenience store.” Does the inclusion of shockingly expensive niche products make a typical convenience store better? That’s for you to decide. I suppose for me, it is comforting to know that I can buy a hand-poured candle, a craft bottle of champagne, a box of strawberry pop tarts, and a nitro cold brew with oat milk all in one stop. For high-maintenance people like me who still enjoy the finer things in life (i.e. Pop Tarts,) it really just might be an unexpected dream come true. It is said that good marketers fill needs that customers didn’t even know they had, and for me at least, this rings particularly true of Foxtrot Market.
Before leaving Foxtrot, I decided to pick up a few of the local baked goods to sample and review. After much deliberation (there were many options to choose from, including massive rice krispie treats, fudgy brownies, and gourmet candy mixes), I went with a cookie dough brownie and a nutella-stuffed chocolate chip cookie. While the brownie was underwhelming (my friend and I agreed that the cookie dough layer had a dry, off-putting texture), the massive “Nutella Phatty” cookie is truly what all of my baked good dreams are made of. Chocolate chips, M&Ms, and a thick hazelnut chocolate filling? Count me in. My overall recommendation? Grab a couple friends, order a coffee and enjoy an aesthetically-pleasing interior, and grab some fun treats to go. I promise you’ll be able to find something that fits your preferences, whether that looks more like a bundle that contains a pint of Jeni’s ice cream and a complimentary bottle of wine, or an individual pack of Hostess Twinkies.
