In the midst of a pandemic, revolutions have no time to wait. Back in May when the protests began, GW students mobilized despite being scattered across the world. Students shared information through the “Overheard at GW” page and on Instagram. Individuals and organizations in the GW community continue making efforts to cultivate a truly equitable environment on campus, even virtually.
New organizations such as GW Black Defiance and GW Mutual Aid launched over the summer. Social media has been a vital tool in the age of digital activism, globally and locally. GW organizations shared educational and action-oriented resources to use their platform and speak out. Some organizations such as the GW Black Student Union introduced quarantine series to their followers on Instagram live with guests and topics like activism, academic preparedness and tips for success.
GW’s Black Girl Mentorship Program also started a quarantine series called “Black Girl Magic,” that features different Black women in or associated with the GW community focusing on topics such as entrepreneurship, health and culture. On Wednesday, the program had their second episode on “Changing The Way We Talk About Sex,” with Jalynn Lane, who works with Heart to Hand Inc. to provide and make HIV testing accessible.
“Black Girl Mentorship empowers Black women by giving them a space to just be who they are and talk about their experiences as a Black woman on a predominantly white campus,” BGM Social Media Chair Autumn Thompson said. “It’s super important for freshmen to have mentors, especially right now because they have never been to GW. It’s hard to navigate being a black woman in a white space on campus, but it’s a lot harder for being virtual because the freshmen haven’t met anyone in person.”
Other organizations started fundraising to benefit the D.C. community, like National Council of Negro Women. The NCNW raised over $1,700 for Anacostia High School in SE D.C., whose population is 97 percent Black students.
Elon Mitchell, Secretary of the NCNW said, “I think that when you’re in a place, you should do your best to take care of that place, even if you’re there for a limited time. You have a moral obligation to fundraise for your community. If you have the means to actually take care of your community, that should make you want to pursue it even more,” Mitchell said. “It’s really unbecoming of GW as a university and GW students individually to just take all they can from D.C., enjoy the nightlife and the free museums, but then not give back.”
GW Mutual Aid was launched to assist students in need of financial assistance through redistribution of donated funds. The organization encourages financially privileged students to donate and help other members of the GW community. The page also has a spreadsheet to connect students with other financial assistance funds and for course material exchanges.
Black Girl Mentorship created an empowerment fund to cover costs of essential supplies for their members in need. The organization also created a book scholarship for required textbooks.
While the responsibility of making GW a more equitable university is something that only administration can provide, socially conscious students will continue to pressure administration and try to educate others within the community.
“I think that the administration definitely has a lot more work to do than the students, but I would be remiss to say that students don’t have their own work to do,” Mitchell said. “I haven’t had as many direct run-ins with inequity with administration as I have had with students. I would say that most of the responsibility lies on the administration, but the students have a lot of work to do too. That little diversity and inclusion module we had to do as freshman, that did not work.”
Through the pandemic and Black Lives Matter, it has been apparent that community members cannot put their faith into institutions to provide them with what they need. It is up to the community to support and protect one another.
