As autumn quickly approaches, GW students are beginning to transition from clothing to accommodate hot and humid weather to the comforting styles that accompany brisk, windy weather. As the new season rolls in, so are new trends across campus. Here are some of the top trends spotted around Foggy Bottom.
Although the Birkenstock clog gained niche attention last year, its popularity is skyrocketing this fall. Paired with baggy jeans or sweats, its versatility makes it one of the most sought after shoes. While the most popular color is taupe, there are a multitude of styles and shades to choose from to compliment your wardrobe. If the Birkenstock clog is too mainstream for you, there are many other brands that are making their own unique version of the clog.
If clogs aren’t your personal style, the new sneaker gaining traction is the Adidas Samba. This feels like a blast from the past, given the popularity of Adidas Superstars during many of our formative middle school years. Nonetheless, the Samba is a more elevated Superstar. The black Adidas Samba seems to be the sneaker of the season, popping up all over campus, but any colorway is a great option to add to your sneaker collection.
A quick walk through campus makes it evident that trench and tailored coats are making their comeback. It is true what people say about trend cycling, what goes around comes back around. There is the classic neutral trench or the tailored navy wool coat. Short or long, this chic look is what is going to keep GW students warm this winter. Chunky, colorful scarves are accompanying these trenches. A drape around the shoulders can elevate even the simplest of outfits, while also adding a personal statement to your look.
Looking for extra warmth but a coat is too extreme for you? Learning to layer adds warmth and dimension to a classic fall look. Trenches are a great layering option, but one that’s gaining popularity is long sleeves and sweater vests. This is a great option for Washington, DC, which has a hard time deciding what the temperature is on a given day. Here is some inspiration for how to layer, and the various ways to make a look multidimensional.
A great way to wrap all the current trends up, or literally carry them, is with a big tote bag. As opposed to the typically sized tote bags, larger, more statement bags are being seen on students’ shoulders. If you want to treat yourself after this first round of midterms, go grab yourself an oversized tote to make carrying your various books stylish.
