With all of the concerns and questions in deciding on freshman-year courses, I considered factors such as graduation requirements, major requirements, and personal interests. However, just as important but overlooked, evaluating professors was not part of my equation. About a year later after completing one of my mandatory courses, World History 1500, my professor resigned after it was discovered by a junior scholar, who later brought this to the attention of the associate professor of the African Diaspora at the Michigan State University, Yomaira Figueroa, that my professor had been falsifying her identity. Specifically, Jessica Krug who was a white woman from Kansas City and my freshman-year history teacher posed under numerous Black Identities throughout her adult life: claiming the identities of “ North African Blackness, then the U.S. rooted Blackness, then the Caribbean rooted Bronx Blackness”(washingtonian.com).
This scandal is the latest way in which our university administration has failed its community by not doing a thorough enough background check. Equally as important, Jessica Krug, who although is not the first person to participate in blackfishing, is a prime example of ways in which people deliberately appropriate for personal gain in beauty and fashion trends.
A Deeper Look Into Blackfishing
The term was created by the journalist Wanna Thompson, who used the phrase to “describe the phenomenon of non-Black influencers and public figures using bronzer, tanning, Photoshop, or even cosmetic surgery to change their looks to appear Black or mixed race” (health.com). Unlike blackface, which is the practice of intentionally darkening and embellishing one’s features to mock Africans and African-Americans, blackfishing differs in its intent.

What this means in the scheme of racism is that while people of other races will intentionally alter their appearances through similar means to resemble notable African features, they do so because they think these features are desirable. Nonetheless, considering that other races are picking parts of black women they like, without fully experiencing the additional hardships that come with being a black woman, blackfishing is equally as harmful as the former.
Disclaimer: Blackfishing is also used as a term to refer to women who appropriate Arabic or Hispanic cultures.
The Kardashians, The Jenners, and The Normalization of Blackfishing
While it is common for beauty standards to change throughout history, African and African-American beauty has often been overlooked, rebuffed, and even banned in schools and the workforce. Even in the wake of progressive legislation, such as the CROWN Act, which was a law instituted by California in 2019 that protects against discrimination in the workforce toward those with natural or textured hair, society, the media, and the general public still have a long way to go. Additionally, as part of the journey towards anti-racism, we must hold celebrities such as the Kardashians and Jenners, who are notorious for appropriating black culture (i.e wearing box braids, getting butt enhancements, etc.), responsible. Although blackfishing did not start or end with the Kardashians and Jenners, by using the very same cultural styles that black women have been scrutinized for, for so long, and making them seem “cool” and “desirable” to the mainstream (especially white girls), they were particularly big contributors to the popularization of blackfishing.
Blackfishing Extends to Marginalized Groups
As previously stated, blackfishing doesn’t start or end with the Kardashians. Pictured above is Selena Gomez, who intentionally made her skin significantly darker, and sported box braids & baby hairs for her Interview Magazine Cover: prominent baby hairs and box braids are hairstyles that are associated with African hairstyles. However, because the Latinx community is another marginalized group, and because there is a large Afro-Latinx presence amongst Latinx communities, the lines are a little blurrier when it comes to appropriation compared to those of European descent. Despite this, it doesn’t mean that other marginalized groups can employ the same hurtful practices to profit off of other marginalized groups.

Moving forward, all races, need to be more cognizant of the culturally enriched roots ingrained within many beauty trends. Being cognizant isn’t limited to merely identifying such trends, but understanding that much of these popular beauty trends originated from marginalized groups and have been slightly rebranded and renamed to give, mainly white people, the credit that is not due. While it is never ok to culturally appropriate, lines can be blurred where cultures, such as Afro-Latinx, intersect. Even for those who are multicultural, it is important to understand and respect the line between fashion-forward and cultural appropriation.
